Victorian Kauri Sideboard or Washstand c.1885 This gorgeous sideboard or washstand is constructed with solid kauri and incorporates classic Victorian elements such as intricate piercing, repetitive spindles, three beveled mirrors and highly decorative brass handles. The piece was made in Melbourne by Danish furniture manufacturer, George Christian Clauscen and bears the maker’s stamp, Clauscen & Co 194-196 Bourke Street, Melbourne. It is in good original condition and has had minimal restoration. The pink marble was cracked and this has been replaced with a piece of black marble. 4. Victorian Cedar Sideboard c.1860-1890 This unusual cedar sideboard was probably made in Australia during the mid 19th century.The piece has been beautifully made using solid cedar and side cedar panelling, together with a peaked back highlighted by a panel of fiddleback cedar. The strong influence of Beidemeier design is evident in its pyramidal shaped back and square section tapering legs. The Arts and Crafts handles are a later addition, probably around 1900 and some replacement shelves have been recently added. This is a truely unique piece of furniture. 9. Maple & Co Games Table or Desk c.1885 To own this is to own a piece from the halcyon days of Late Victorian furniture making. The table is made of solid oak and walnut with some veneer work and is in totally original condition. The graceful solid oak legs lead to quality brass and ceramic wheels. The two opposing drawers have walnut interiors, brass handles and both are stamped Maple & Co. The stamped leather top is tooled and has a lovely patina.
“One of the most important names in Edwardian furniture was Maple & Co. Maples was based in Tottenham Court Road, London and was the largest furniture store in the world. It made its own furniture for sale at home and abroad, and drew its own customers from both the middle and upper classes and even royalty – Tsar Nicholas of Russia furnished his Winter Palace with furniture from its workshops. Victorian Kauri Washstand or Sideboard c.1885 This gorgeous washstand or sideboard is constructed with solid kauri and incorporates classic Victorian elements such as intricate piercing, repetitive spindles, three beveled mirrors and highly decorative brass handles. The piece was made in Melbourne by Danish furniture manufacturer, George Christian Clauscen and bears the maker’s stamp, Clauscen & Co 194-196 Bourke Street, Melbourne. It is in good original condition and has had minimal restoration. The pink marble was cracked and this has been replaced with a piece of black marble. Arts and Crafts Oak Dresser Cabinet c.1920 This beautiful Arts and Crafts oak dresser cabinet has a carved mirrored back and plenty of storage with two smaller drawers over two deep drawers, all with cedar interiors, and a single cupboard with shelf, original metal castors and mission style handles. This cabinet could be used in just about any room in the house. It would be fantastic in the bathroom as the mirror can be detached and mounted on the wall and it could be a useful workbench in the kitchen or laundry. Its castors make it easy to move. Arts and Crafts Brass Fuel Chest c.1890 This impressive Arts and Crafts embossed brass coal box is a piece of art in its own right and is something that could not be replicated in style or manufacture today. The piece has three embossed brass sides that cover a thick, pine carcass that sits on bun feet and the brass top that features the word “Fuel” is secured by large strap hinges. The extraordinary designs on each panel depict mythological fish and foliage. It was originally designed to store wood and coal for open fires in Victorian times but could be used for storage of any items in a heritage or modern home.
